Have had these boots around six months, bought to replace my old riggers which were bought from a builder’s merchants, and were, I believe made in China. Old boots were typical wide sloppy fit, and had to be thrown away when the (non-replaceable) soles wore through. Therefore, because I had taken care to look after the uppers I had to dispose of them in what still felt like good condition. As I already have a pair of William Lennon traditional work boots, I thought I’d try the Rufflander riggers too.
I was very surprised when they arrived, for they appear to be made on a much more old-fashioned last than typical riggers, and felt both overly narrow and too tight across the top of my rather high-arched feet. Nevertheless, I softened them up with some Nikwax and wore them in the pouring rain a couple of times.
The contrast between these boots and my old one’s is now hard to believe. They are still moulding to my feet, but the narrower shape is very supportive- so much so that I sometimes wear them for country walks where I know there is deep mud or water. The leather is of superb quality, and with a little wax, is almost totally water-proof. My work is landscaping, for which these boots are excellent, being both comfortable and water-resistant to a very great degree. This particular boot comes with a very warm fleece lining, making it a definitely more of a cold-weather item for me. The style of these boots kept reminding me of something, until a friend asked me if I’d found a pair of old WW1 German marching boots!
They are indeed comfortable enough to ‘march’ a long way in, and despite a fair bit of wear and tear, they still look like new after a wipe-over. All round an excellent boot, and the only reason I would not give them 5 stars is because I have not owned them long enough to see if they become even more comfortable with wear. On current appearance, they look like they may very well out-last me!

I purchased these boots back in May 2015. Despite my best attempts at wearing them out, they remain superbly comfortable, warm in winter, almost completely water-proof and still looking like I will have them in another ten years.

I feel bad for only giving them a miserly four stars in my original review. After three years of solid winter use, both work and leisure- I have returned to give them the five stars they so abundantly deserve.

While clearly designed as a work boot, which purpose they fulfil perfectly (metal toe-caps recently shrugged-off a hard blow from a spade)- I would definitely also recommend them as a country boot and sturdier alternative to wellingtons.

    Cannot fault them!

I received my boots yesterday and they are of exceptional high quality. They also seem to be very good value. Rigger boots made in China, purchased from the builders merchant, cost £40 and last me around two years. This pair, made in England, bought for just under £100, will probably last me for ever. The vibram soles are replaceable and the thick leather will only improve with age. I am delighted with my purchase and gain great satisfaction from buying British. In these uncertain times we should buy British when possible – with this quality and value it certainly makes sense.
